Ingredients in chewing tobacco
Swedish Match manufactures two different categories of chewing tobacco; loose leaf and plug. The tobacco used in chewing tobacco is high quality tobacco mainly grown in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin in the US. Most chewing tobacco products are flavoured with sweet-tasting syrups called casings. The casings are soaked into the leaf to produce unique and preferred flavours.
- Loose leaf is based on cut tobacco leaf which is processed through several stages. Throughout the process the Quality Assurance professionals check the tobaccos appearance, measure its leaf size and moisture content to guarantee product consistency. The production of loose leaf involves the sizing, casing, drying, and packaging of the product.
- Plug tobacco got its name from the way it was made. The tobacco was soaked in wild honey and then "plugged" into green hickory or maple logs to age. The plugging compressed the tobacco into a convenient form (a block) while allowing the flavours to penetrate the plug. Today, a more industrial process is used. Throughout the process the Quality Assurance professionals check the tobaccos appearance and moisture content to guarantee product consistency.
