History of pipe tobacco

It is generally believed that the first users of pipe tobacco were the indigenous people of North America, perhaps as early as 8,000 years ago. Archeologists have found pipes dating from about 2,000 B.C. Pipe smoking is definitely one of the oldest forms of tobacco use.

The Europeans who landed with Christopher Columbus in the Bahamas in 1492 were given tobacco leaves as gifts. At that time, the use of tobacco and pipe smoking was common in many parts of North America.

Explorers to North America brought tobacco plants and seeds back to Europe. Doctors and botanists were the first cultivators of the plant. Doctors believed that tobacco could cure serious diseases such as cancer and syphilis.

In the 1600s, pipe smoking was the primary form of tobacco use in Sweden. Today, Swedish Match´s Borkum Riff is the leading pipe tobacco in the world.
