Occurrence in nature: Benz(a)pyrene, B(a)P, belongs to the group of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which are products of incomplete combustion of organic material. B(a)P is present as a contaminant in the environment as a result of burning of fossil fuels.
Occurrence in tobacco: Benz(a)pyrene is present in low concentrations in fire-cured tobacco, but also in trace amounts in other types tobacco due to contamination from polluted air.
Occurrence in foodstuffs: Beno(a)pyrene is present in trace amounts in most foodstuffs, such as fruits, vegetables and cereals. The level of B(a)P is slightly higher in roasted or fried foodstuffs. There exists no threshold value for B(a)P in foodstuffs in Sweden.
