Marianne Pedersen

“I evaluate flavor, aroma, consistency and appearance of the products. Sensory evaluation is a key link between the market, analysis and consumer insight.”

“This entails attempting to ‘translate’ what consumers say, or actually mean, into product terms that we can achieve or change.  Great cooperation and communication across business borders always gives an energy kick.”

Marianne PedersenDescribe your job?

“We work with sensory evaluation of snus, which means that we evaluate flavor, aroma, consistency and appearance of the products under production development. I am assisted by various panels that taste, smell and test the snus. We also ensure storage stability, meaning we make sure that the snus remains fresh right up to its expiry date. We conduct profile tests on the snus by defining the various properties and quality of the snus. Sensory evaluation is a key link between the market, analysis and consumer insight, since we assist in interpreting the requests, opinions and requirements of consumers. This entails attempting to ‘translate’ what consumers say – or actually mean – into product terms that we can achieve or change. There can be many sources of irritation related to both snus and packaging. We pay attention to opinions concerning non-desirable effects; for example, that the snus may seem too bitter, dry or moist.”

What motivates you during a working day?

“I find it interesting being part of the entire chain, since nearly everything that is developed passes through sensory evaluation. When the product is subsequently launched, it is gratifying to have been involved in the product journey. At the same time, taking care of our established products is equally inspiring, to ensure that they are perceived and taste the same from year to year. Our participation and the results of our work contribute to job satisfaction.”

What is the greatest challenge associated with your job?

“Consumers must find our products attractive and want what we sell. As new consumers discover our products, we will naturally need to refine and develop them. Competition in the market is exciting, and requires that we must always be better than all the other players. Consequently, the greatest challenge is to develop new products and formats that match consumer demands and requests. While the content of the can is important, the packaging and format also play an increasingly vital role for the consumer. The can is an important part of sensory evaluation; it must be attractive to the consumers’ eye, preserve the quality of the snus and, in particular, be environmentally friendly.”
